Who We Are

Birat Nepal Medical Trust (BNMT Nepal) is a Nepalese non-governmental organisation dedicated towards the improved health and well-being of Nepalese people. BNMT Nepal envisions a new Nepal where all Nepalese are aware of their basic rights and are able to live healthy and productive lives, in a safe environment without having to worry about food, income or security regardless of their gender, ethnicity, disability or HIV status.

BNMT Nepal is built on the foundation of commitment, expertise and experience of the Britain Nepal Medical Trust (BNMT UK) which has been working in Nepal since 1967.  BNMT Nepal is governed by a board of Nepalese nationals with diverse experience in health, livelihoods, climate change, and social and community development. The BNMT Nepal board and the BNMT UK senior management team have been mentoring and transferring their knowledge, skill and experiences to the newly formed BNMT Nepal over the last few years for the benefit of Nepalese people. BNMT UK continues to offer this oversight and mentoring to BNMT Nepal to ensure that BNMT Nepal can benefit from the partnerships, collaboration and success of BNMT UK and attain the vision of its board.

BNMT UK, from its inception, has always lived with the principle of evidence based advocacy and operational research for designing its programmes and continuously monitoring, evaluation and fine-tuning its implementation strategies to reach the hard to reach population.  These principles it has embedded into the practice of BNMT Nepal.

Focus for this strategic period (2014- 2019)
In this strategic period the main focus will continue to be on health and other social determinants of the most vulnerable populations of Nepal.  This will be achieved through achieving the following goals:

  •   To scale-up existing programmes
  •   To invest in new, innovative approaches in the areas of nutrition, food security and livelihoods.
  •  To expand our geographical reach, bringing our Integrated Health Improvement Programme to more   communities.
  •   To build communities resilience to the effects of climate change, the environment and disasters on human health.

These goals will be achieved through our four pillars of Promoting Quality Health Care and Ensuring Health Rights, Building Resilience to Climate Change, Policy and Advocacy Support.

Current and Future Challenges
Nepal is going through a transitional period, politically, socially, and in relation to the epidemiological transition in non-communicable diseases.  In addition, within this strategic period the initial term of the Millennium Development Goals will come to an end (2015).

BNMT is aware and capable of adapting to political changes and possible decentralization of the government structure within Nepal and is working with stakeholders to develop  post-MDG strategies, which include the sustainability and strengthening of achieved MDG targets as well as new, pertinent areas of Sustainable Development.
