DronEconomics

Overview

BNMT Nepal implemented a drone transport service in Pyuthan district, one of Nepal’s remote and hilly areas, with funding support from the Nick Simons Foundation from 2018-2019. The project titled DrOTS, used drones to carry sputum samples for TB diagnosis, helping female community health volunteers quickly send samples to laboratories with GeneXpert PCR machines for faster results (www.drones4nepal.org). The initiative showed that drones can easily cross Nepal’s hills and valleys, work year-round, and help overcome many access barriers to healthcare in rural areas. This approach could also be used to deliver vaccines, medicines, and other health supplies. However, a crucial question is the cost and cost-effectiveness of drones for health service delivery.

DronEconomics research grant is a Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded early career research grant received by our colleague, Health Economist, Anchal Thapa to analyze the costs and cost-effectiveness of the DrOTS project and explore ways in which drone transport systems can be designed to improve the cost-effectiveness for healthcare delivery.
